Discussion: Concerns Regarding Rule Violations in Final Hackathon Results
Hello everyone,
I hope you are doing well. First, I would like to thank the organizers and participants for putting together this hackathon. It was a valuable experience and an opportunity to learn and build.
However, I am writing to raise serious concerns about the final judging outcomes, particularly regarding adherence to the hackathon’s official rules and judging criteria.
Official Rule:
“All projects must be developed during the hackathon period only (May 16 to June 29).”
Key Observations:
1st Place Team:
A significant portion of their codebase was committed before the start of the hackathon (April).
Several commits during the final week appear artificial or back-dated.
2nd Place Team:
Repository contains commits from April, in direct violation of the hackathon timeline.
Publicly exposed API key in their repository, indicating a lack of technical best practices.
3rd Place (EchoMed AI):
The demo video submitted appears unrelated to the actual project and features drone footage.
No working deployment was provided.
Codebase contains exposed Gemini API key and lacks structure and quality.
Judging Criteria:
Innovation
Technical Skill
Impact
Design and User Experience
Presentation
Based on these criteria, it is unclear how these submissions ranked as winners. Several of them clearly violated core rules, exposed sensitive data, and lacked working demos or technical quality.
Why This Matters:
Many participants, including myself, invested a significant amount of time and effort building original, technically sound projects entirely during the hackathon period. It is discouraging to see results that appear to reward entries that bypassed the rules and demonstrated poor development practices.
This not only undermines the efforts of rule-abiding teams but also damages the credibility of the event.
Request for Clarification:
I respectfully request the organizers and judges to provide a clear explanation regarding how these decisions were made, especially in light of the apparent violations. Transparency is important to maintain fairness and trust within the community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Pranav Advani
